The Skinny on Full Figured Fashion Week 2015

Big Bella Donna style on the FFFWeek red carpet
I had the pleasure of attending my first Full Figure Fashion Week held in New York City from June 14-20, 2015.  I made into town just in time for the weekend events. The week/weekend was full of energy with so many full figure/plus size fashionistas, bloggers, models, and industry insiders assembling to celebrate the fabulousness of full figured women. Fashion lovers who attended the event for the entire week certainly got their fill of all things fashion. (P.S. I wrote about the details the outfit in the photo in my summer black out series.)

The week opened with several social events including a luau party and a jazz brunch. The arch of the week was highlighted by the famous all white party cruise. This event is said to be the most anticipated affair besides the two fashion shows.  I arrived in time for Friday night's event which honored and showcased the work of a number of independent designers. It was truly moving to see so much creativity on display.

I also attended the "Turning Your Passion into Profit" workshop on Saturday morning. It turned out to be a small intimate setting with many folks either too tired to arise for the event or those who were absent because they choose to attend theCURVYcon which was also being held in the city on that day. However, the size of the crowd did not stop the panelists from sharing their powerful personal stories and offering sage advice for newcomers endeavoring to following their passion to a paycheck.

The FFFWeek finale was a grand showing of plus size retailers and boutiques as well as the award presentations for those in the industry.  I was able to snap some quick photos of some of the honorees receiving their awards.  I follow Your Big Sister's Closet and Sydney's Closet on Instagram so I was happy to see them receive recognition for their contribution to the plus size industry.

I enjoyed seeing and meeting so many beautiful, confident, plus size women who embraced not only their size and stature, but their relevance in the fashion industry. I even got a "bonus gift" by being bumped up to the front row right near the runway during the Friday night show. Photos of some of the pieces showcased during the independent designer show are below. It's a side view of the models as they made their way down the catwalk as this was my vantage point from my seat alongside the runway.

Fashion in general is really a celebration of individuality, and an exploration of how to express one's personal sense of style and uniqueness which ultimately allows a person feel and look their best. I plan to attend next year's event and next time I'll be ready to take in more of the full experience that encompasses the week. Follow the Full Figured Fashion Week page on Instagram (@fffweek) for more pictures & updates and save the date for next - June 12-18, 2016.
