Sydney's Closet's "Nina" At Philadelphia African American Museum's 40th Annual Heritage Gala

On April 8, I attended the African American Museum of Philadelphia's (AAMP) 40th annual Heritage Gala with my husband who is a proud board member for the museum. It's a true honor to represent a cornerstone in the city of Philadelphia. The night was filled with beautiful artwork, beautiful people and a beautiful spirit. My gown for the evening was this gorgeous "Nina" gown from Sydney's Closet. The classic sophistication of this black beauty is undeniable.

This event always feels like a family reunion. Museum members, friends, and guests all converge on the grounds of this historic institution to celebrate another year of upholding, showcasing, and highlighting the achievements and artistic expressions of African Americans. Some see each other often, others only at this time of year. But the mood is always joyous! Local celebrities and dignitaries often attend the event which this year included Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

My dress for the evening gave me a timeless, effortless look. Anything with lace detailing just screams femininity to me (soft delicate screams if you will). The A-line silhouette is my go-to dress style as is the floor sweeping length of the gown.

I tried to get shots that showed its best features, but the lighting in the facility was altered for the event so a side hallway was my best choice. I did, however, take a picture in the foyer so I can capture the signage in a shot and took some candid shots with some of the beautiful ladies on the museum staff and a darling family friend who is a well known speaker and business owner in the Philadelphia area. You can see how the gown shows up in different lighting in these shots.

With Amber M. a lovely AAMP employee and family friend.
With Ms. Kimberly Reed, motivational speaker, entrepreneur, all-around sweetheart!

Let me know what makes you feel uber-feminine and if you'd wear Miss Nina to your next black tie affair.

*Styling notes: This gown has v-shaped neckline in the front and back. Depending on how you fill out the top, your undergarment might show in the back. Take this in consideration when getting alterations should you need them. If you really don't want to alter the dress, then wear a cami or bandeau top underneath which is what I did. I didn't think it took away from the dress at all and I didn't have to worry about my brasserie playing peek-a-boo throughout the evening.
